Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Wee Waa NSW Farmers Branch donate to WWHS Debating Team

Ten Students from Wee Waa High School are busy undergoing weekly training and practice during their lunch break in term 2 for the 2018 Premier's Debating Challenge for Years 7 and 8. Debates have been organised against Narrabri High School (topic- education), Collarenebri High School (topic- the media) and Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School (topic-Australian society).

The Wee Waa NSW Farmers Branch Chair Michael Haire proudly presented a cheque to Team Captain Emma Kirby. The local Branch have a long history supporting the community across education, rural community issues and agriculture, and were ‘pleased to contribute' said Michael.

The first debate for the year will be held on Wednesday June 6 at Collarenebri Central School, accompanying the students will be staff Carmel Schwager and Helen Wenner. This year the Team will be guided by two Year 9 mentors Amelia Kiem and Sarah Hamilton, who will draw on their experience to support the Team. A team dinner will be held in the near future to provide the students and parents a chance to further build team spirit.

Merino's Wether The Challenge

It has been a busy few weeks for ag students of Wee Waa High School, who have been working with a new breed of sheep on the school farm, the mighty merino.

The preparation of the merino wethers has been a collaborative effort for all agricultural students from all years, who have been involved in the preparation of the flock.

Preparation details include daily feeding and paddock rotation and weighing fortnightly.

Local Duo Represent North West

Wee Waa High School duo Georgia cone, Year 11 and Zac Doring Year 7, were recently chosen to represent the North West region at the Combined High Schools State Bowling competition, making up half of the four person team.

Both veterans of extremely successful bowling careers at very young ages, it was not surprising that they were selected into the team.

Getting The Low Down On The Big Award

Auscott Ltd Representative Lenna Nagele popped into visit Wee Waa High School students to let them know more about the annual Auscott Ltd Education Scholarship on offer.

the HSC students were fortunate to beable to clarify several aspects of the scholarship directly with Ms Nagele.

The scholarship, which is capped at $11,500 annually for the duration of the course is awarded to an individual who has shown extension over several selection aspects and is not solely academically performance based.

Young scientists from wee Waa High School took their talents to the Science, Engineering and Investigation awards at Narrabri's Crossing Theatre on Thursday.

All Narrabri Shire schools were invited to participate in the annual awards designed to promote science among students.

The Year 9 and 10 students presented the innovative and imaginative projects that they had been working on at school for the judges appraisal.

Former Wee Waa High School Student Overcomes Hurdles to Achieve Success

Graduating from Wee Waa High School in 2011, Brandon Nicholls has fond memories of being with "really supportive friends" at the school.

Infact, Mr Nicholls would say it was thee friendships that got him through the HSC years.

Today, distance is an obstacle to regular catchups, but they remain his oldest friends.

Students come out on top at stampede

Five members of the Wee Waa High School cattle show team attended the Charolais National Youth Stampede at the Dubbo Showground. With the event catering to more than 120 youth competitors over the three days it was a new experience for the students.

Once again, the team worked with the Myona Stud from Coonamble. A Young Farmers Challenge was held on the Friday night, with the WWHS team members joining other youth competitors to make up the winning team.

Distance Education Initiative

Distance education students living in Wee Waa are about to benefit from a new educational initiative.

The Narrabri and Wee Waa District Outreach Centre was launched on July 26th at Narrabri Library and the following day at Wee Waa Library.

The aim of the outreach program is to provide fact-to-face support to students who otherwise do not attend school, but study via the Dubbo School of Distance Education.

Stephen And Students Keeping The Meaning of Wee Waa Alive

Artist and heritage conservation Officer from the Office of Environment and Heritage, Stephen Booby and Wee Waa High School students Trekiah Cochrane, Jason-Lee Trindall and Tihana Williams are midway through completing a giant mural of great significance to Wee Waa.

Mr Booby said that the mural highlighted the Wee Waa landscape and geography.

Wee Waa High School Enjoys More Success At Charolais National Youth Stampede

Five members of the wee Waa High School cattle show team attended the Charolais National Youth Stampede from the 29th June through to 2nd July, 2017.

The students were accompanied by their teacher, Mrs Verity Gett,and thoroughly enjoyed the event held at the Dubbo showground.

With the whole shed being full of Charolais cattle and with the event catering to more than 120 youth competitors over the three days, it was a new experience for the students.

Rich Culture Captured

Dave and Christopher Byrne from Rusty Cage production company spent the last week in Narrabri Shire shooting video footage.

Rusty Cage is a Sydney based video production company, which focuses primarily on broadcast content, television series, corporate videos and television commercials.

However, perhaps the most unique aspect of the company is the work it does across regional Australia.

Bush Bots Do It Again

The Wee Waa High School Bush Bots team had another amazing robotics experience during the July school holiday break. Entering their robot in the 'Duel Down Under' at Macquarie University from 3rd to 5th July, the team once again returned triumphant as finalists.

"We've had an amazing time at the robotics comp" said mentor Jo Horne. "The team worked so well together and were dedicated to their mission."

WWHS Wins The Most Successful School At Coonamble Show

The students attended two shows in the space of a week. the first saw six members of the Wee Waa High School show team, along with parent helper Robyn Allen, spend two days at the Dubbo Show.

University of NSW research officer Dr Franz Carrillo of the AIMHIGH Unit, is currently completing a road trip interviewing more than 800 Year 12 students from 40 schools in regional and remote regional rural NSW.

Dr Carrillo was successful in receiving funding from both the NSW Department of Education and the Federal Government for his project "Powers of Perception."

A $500 Gift From Inner Wheel To Bush Bots

The donation will cover travel costs for the 2018 FIRT International Robotics competition to be held in Sydney next March.

Wee Waa High Schools Under 16 rugby union sevens squad recently completed a very rewarding trip to Armidale to play in the New England North West NSW Rugby Sevens competition.

Accompanied by two school rugby enthusiasts, hospitality teacher Josh O'Shea and Deputy Principal Allan Tame, 10 WWHS students, three Narrabri High and one St Marys Gunnedah student headed off to Armidale.

Bush Bots Supporters Thanked

Sponsors of the Wee Waa High School Bush Bots Robotics Team were recently invited to share a morning tea with a riveting recount of the robotics semi-final battle, complete with live footage of what came down to the last three seconds of the battle round.

Returning from Sydney after being knocked out in the semi-finals in the 2017 First International Robotics competition, the team was able to relive the final battle all over, and those in the audience could not help but hold their breaths in that final three seconds.

Students from Wee Waa High School recently performed in the Speech and Drama section of the Narrabri Arts Eisteddfod and brought home an array of medals and place certificates.

"This was our second year of training and entering students in the Eisteddfod", said Learning Support Teacher Carmel Schwager.

"The growth in the students' confidence and performing skills was very evident and also noted by several members of the Narrabri Arts Eisteddfod Committee too."

The pungent aroma of baking and coffee was sweet and strong at Wee Waa High Schools hospitality classroom recently, as the Year 11 hospitality students hosted the Narrabri High School's hospitality food and beverage teacher along with five Year 12 students to spend a day getting to know all about coffee....

As part of their VET Certificate II in Kitchen Operations(Wee Waa High School) and Certificate II in Hospitality(Narrabri High School) courses, the students are required to complete 'Prepare and Serve Espresso' (a unit of competency), which includes the front of the house components of customer relations, ordering, service and production.

During the summer holidays Wee Waa High School staff were delighted to hear that 2016 Year 12 student, Amber Conomos was awarded the prestigious Auscott Scholarship.

Amber said the scholarship will be of great assistance and help her with costs associated with the Bachelor of Business degree she commences later this month.

Let's Get More Mental Health Support For Local Youth

Wee Waa High School is part of a committee lobbying for a HEADSPACE hub for Moree and Narrabri.

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples' wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

Information and services for young people, their families and friends as well as health professionals can be accessed through their website, headspace centres, online counselling service eheadspace, and postvention suicide support program headspace School Support.

WWHS Aboriginal students were keen participants in this year's Indigenous Games. Held annually in Goodooga, NSW, the games draw students from a wide area and sees the town's population triple in size from 200 to almost 600.
